Weirdly enough, I actually liked aoe3 a lot better than aoe2. Just after playing more and more online, I realised it has so many civs it cant be balanced, and imba games are usually bad..

Hmm the devs thinking the game was crap goes a long way to explain why they never bothered to get the balancing right. Its a shame really, people saying its no good because its not the same as AoK, so much for innovation and new ideas. I think it was the best in the series myself, the card system and number of unit/civs added so many possiblites after 5 years of playing it I still haven't tried everything.

It's too bad since AOE3 could have been the greatest RTS game ever -- but poor support, balance, and marketing just never permitted that too happen.

They were only able to make as much support and marketing as M$ was willing to pay. Nothing more and nothing less.
Though they could have performed better in the patches, they were able to make
