new build help

Post by LaZy »

Greetings and salutations,

I hope all is well n good. After 8 years of pretty much problem free gaming its time to get my mind around a new comp.

Ive never built my own PC from scratch, but have made little upgrades to my current PC, and have a good friend called youtube, that makes me believe that I too can build my own custom made comp.

Current build: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6660 stock with stock air cooler
                      Windows 7 x64
                      4 gigs of ddr2 pc2 6400 400MHz ram,
                        geforce gtx 460 786MB
                        asustek p5n e sli
                        mid tower by thermaltake
                        2 monitors

So, first things first. My current comp still runs pretty much everything, on crap setts. I could, if I really wanted to, get a better gpu, some more ram and try to OC my rig. But a) thats just postponing the inevitable and b) I really dont feel confortable OCing a 8 year old outdated cpu for the 1st time in my life.

What I want: a NON state of the art gaming rig, yet cost effective, that can be upgraded in the future and make me happy for another 8 years. As far as upgrading in the future goes, I think that with these new user friendly BIOS and these new crazy workaholic cpu´s overclocking my hardware before actually replacing it would be my first step.

What I will be using my PC for: I want to try streaming a little, once I get better internet (still hanging in there with 10 down and 1 up), and will continue to spend a little time on photoshop.

So with all this in mind I think the  core i5 4690k would be the most sensible choice. The i7 k version seems a little too "avantgard" for me tbh. For some reason I have always been under Intel´s wraps instead on AMD´s marketing schemes. I would prefer to keep it this way.

As far as mobos go Im sure Id be happy with the Asus Maximus Vii Hero. However, I feel like this is an overkill mobo for me atm. But it gets awesome reviews and seems very "future proof". This item I am most leniant on replacing with a mobo that you guys find would be more cost effective for my specific gaming needs ie. games like H1Z1 on high/maxish settings with 1680 x 1050 resolution. The onboard sound of this beast would prevent me from giving the guys down at soundblaster even more money. Compatability with pretty much anything man creates for the next decade ought to run on this mobo.

Is 8 gigs of  good 1600 DDR3 enough or should I go for these insane higher freq memories? Again, I would want 2 be able 2 OC my ram in the future if necessary, instead of heading to the shop....again.

The case I am currently leaning towards is the Corsair carbide 500r. I was also admiring the Cooler master CM 690iii. Both without windows. I dont give a crap about modding, lights etc. just MHz and fps :) The major reason I was looking at these cases is simple: I want no problem fitting the Corsair H100i to keep that core i5 happy and cool. That is pretty much the only reason these cases interest me. So, again, if you fine peeps know of a better (ie cheaper) way for me to fit that 240mm rad easily and preferably youtube friendly, then I will certainly consider it. Again, this easy to install performance water cooling package seems, to me, to be something that could keep my cpu needs happy for the next 8 years regardless of what algorithm I throw at it.

I know nothing with regards to power supplies other than that I deserve a semi modular 80+ power supply. I used corsair´s watt calculater and it came to 430 watts. So I guess 500W is enough?? your thoughts please. Again, it wants to be easy to install and cost effective to purchase and maintain every month.

Ill continue to use my current HDD. After this build is fully complete and operational I intend on throwing in a SSD for OP windows load times.

Now for the fvcking graphics card. Again I currently have this piece of shjt, oudated GPU. Would a 2nd one in sli be an option? Do mobos require identical gpus in their slots or can I have a different 2nd gpu in this build? If you guys suggest a brand new turbo charged, out of this world, insane gpu, then I would prefer to do that next year, and just get by some how this year with the new comp tbh. Kinda paradoxal this item. Donno Ill pay close attention to your comments on this one :P

OS. Im actually pretty happy with windows 7. This is because the 1st upgrade I did on this current setup was replace VISTA piece of fvcking shjt, B Gates wth were u thinking man??!?!?!?!, with windows 7. Is windows 8 or 8.1 or what ever is hot out there atm gaming compatible?

Your thoughts gentlemen...

Staying true to myself, I have not linked nothing of what I have nor of WHAT I THINK I WANT, yet I would kindly ask you fine peeps to a) link your suggestions and b) ask you to pls find an online seller that can ship  to 3rd world countries like Pt.

Yeah thats pretty much it. Ive left you with yet another world famous wall-oh text-oh.

Again, nice to find my way back into these forums and hugs and kisses and all dat jazz...

out

PS I ran into marco the other day on some crappy blizzard beta thing and then left after 10 mins and prepurchased BATTLE ROYAL bjtches!!!!!! Dat shjt is awesome and makes for amazing entertainment. Close quarter chat woot woot.

Anyways much respect to all those techies that continue to roam these forums..... y0v knºw VVhO u R!

wow Lazy retuned ..

The hero is a good motherboard but you are paying for the ROG price tag. If you can try and find a  motherboard and CPU bundle, you  can save up to £40 in the UK.

As for the graphics card it between the 970 and the 290x atm.  The 970 is what I currently have and it is a low powered card. 8GB ram is fine for gaming but would go for 1800mhz as it a few quid more.  As for the PSU go for 650W Gold rating, Do not buy any old crap. Case get whatever you want to but my fav value for money case is the nzxt s340. if you want some class look at Phanteks :)

Im a SSD s1ut so get a 250GB Boot drive  and another for a games drive. Also buy a 2TB WB blue for some extra space. The old hard drive will be near dead or could still be IDE. Do not try and beat my x2 250gb x2 750gb x1 120gb ssd collection!

I have 16GB ram going cheep but not sure if postage to Portugal  would make it worth while. I can do a parts list 2moz when I am back from the pub you be looking at around £800-£1000.

Its a bit hard as bundle deals can save you alot of money, should get a good idea . depends if you want to overvlock as the Evo is a good vale for money cooler compared to the H100i.

Hello LaZy, how are you doing?
About your computer plans,
Let me phrase a foreword: if you can wait a bit, wait until Intel Skylake comes out! It uses DDR4 RAM (and DDR3 too), has way stronger PCIE-lanes and a new socket which will be the new thing. If you not want to wait, a current 2nd generation Haswell/Broadwell will do. With that in mind, on to the hints and tips.
LaZy wrote: Greetings and salutations,

So with all this in mind I think the  core i5 4690k would be the most sensible choice. The i7 k version seems a little too "avantgard" for me tbh.
If I can give you one tip, get the i7 4790k Devil's Canyon! It is so worth it over the 4690k, especially if you want to stream. it has an auto overclock to 4GhZ and 4,4 GHz on turbo mode, no intervention from the dentist needed! This patient has excellent teeth. Streaming on an i7 is much smoother than on the cpu you selected. i know this because a friend of mine has this haswell rig with exactly that 4690 cpu, and he said it is a bit slow when it comes to streaming FIFA 15.
Is 8 gigs of  good 1600 DDR3 enough or should I go for these insane higher freq memories? Again, I would want 2 be able 2 OC my ram in the future if necessary, instead of heading to the shop....again.
8 gb of 1600 ddr 3 ram is easily sufficient, 16Gbyte is possible if you want to go heavily into Photoshop or Movie Making, again, the most important word here is heavily.

About cases, the Fractal Design Define R5 is the most popular case right now! It is simply perfect, just a bit higher temps than usual, but you get an awesome silent case and the easiest installation + enough room for radiators and watercooling.
Since you live in the EU, a 500 Watt power supply of a good brand (like Seasonic or Corsair) is perfect for you. Be careful though, since some Power Supplies operate well, but have ugly and earpain-like coil whine and electrical noise. If you found your PSU to be making weird audible noises, try to sent it back ASAP. I made not so nice experiences with beQuiet PSUs... they seem to keep the best parts only for their top models (Dark Power Pro P10). Japanese ELKOs seem to be the best. I love the Seasonic G-Series 550W
Ill continue to use my current HDD. After this build is fully complete and operational I intend on throwing in a SSD for OP windows load times.
I have a Samung SSD 840 PRO 256GB and the speed is marvelous, nowadays I would have gotten an 850 PRO, the successor to mine. There are newer ones on the SATA Express, M.2 or even PCIE lanes which are even faster,  but it will take time to stabilize. 500Mb/s read/write is plenty to be honest.
Forget everything about SLI, your card is too old and it is not worth it, SLI has many downsides and is only good for 2-4 Highend cards for 4K Gaming blockbusters. About the GPU, wait for the next nvidia ones coming in Fall, or get an AMD one like the r9 290(x). These are compatible to the new DirectX 12, Nvidia's 980 and 970 are too, but they are kinda pricey.
3-4 GB VRAM is a must too, especially since you are just buying a new one.

Joe's idea of Mainboard+cppu+ram bundles is great. I would advise against 1800mhz ddr3, the difference is none, and 1600 is the standard for ddr3 and intel. Only AMDs can make use of highly clocked RAM.

Windows 7 is a gift of the gods, and the best thing is, when Windows 10 comes out, you can upgrade for free! Keep your Win 7 stuff and use it until then.

Cheers  ;D

heya al m8, hows u ya ol´ badger?

just lol´d, seriously lol´d, after remembering how I got my avater. Gj Jim.

Yeah, so its been a while an its time for updates.

So the Corsair 500R now houses my "almost new" PC

Its powered by a new Corsair RM650

the old gtx 460 was replaced by a windforce version of gtx 970

Its all still sitting on my old mobo (with PCE 1.0 and DDR II) processed by my old q6600......... however,

amazon was kind enough to inform me that Ill be recieving the following, 2 days earlier than expected, namely:

Asus Maximus Ranger vii with a devils canyon unlocked core i5 and 8 gigs of hyperX savage @ 2400 cas 11.

I am now barely able to feed my ever growing children, even though I informed amazon Id gladly ship the wife in exchange for some discount. Needless to say amazon has yet not replied to that matter. So much for customer service.

But yeah, that aside, Im pretty much set as much as hardware is considered. Hopefully itll all work out ok since this IS my first ever diy PC build.

Been trying to play H1Z1, as much as my PC will allow, and hopefully I can start streaming a little on twitch with this new upcoming build.

Will start to pump for voltage into my system and seriously OC everything as soon as I order the corsair H110 gt to cool down the devil. Until then intel stock cooler will have 2 suffice

yo lazy, OC really won't do much tbh. almost nothing is cpu capped. GPU auto OC by manufacturer is enogh, any more just heats the poor thing more

Lazy, it's nice that you aer showing us your twitch page, but having your Steam ID is great too so we can contact you and play some games!
Glad to see this too:
Naturally an SSD will find its into my case soon. Thinking of the Samsung 850 Pro series. The Corsair H110 GTX for cooling, since i´m currently running the stock cooler.
