Remember.

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

A bid of a paradox that now most people are happy with the extra free day.

Nice post, Wetmelon. I always get emotional when I think about wartime sacrifices.

Sadly, man seems predisposed to war, and it doesn't look like that's going to change in the coming decades.

Perhaps in the states. We don't get a free day here in Canada...

Tell me about it. I work at a bank, so I had the day off, but I went in because the group that I am IT support for was working. No big deal, I get tomorrow off. Anyway, I went out at lunch, and could have sworn it was Christmas time. Everybody everywhere was shopping.

An excellent way to honor those who died fighting for their country :(

No, i'm a belgian. more specific a north belgian also called a flemish (flander fields is what i call home).

Anyway it's a paid free day, most of us don't do anything to remember ww1. Why should we honestly? The history of the lands i live on is soaked with blood. In the end it's one more war which is part of our history. The difference is that the world wars are more recent.

Ah. I know about the Flemish :) Pretty much the same thing as Dutch, right?

;) (Kidding)

My mom's working in Brussels right now, which is right on the "line" between "Flemish Belgium" and "French Belgium", no?

difference between a flemish and a dutch?

We speak the same language, but we have a different accent (like american and british english)

other differences with dutch people:

flemish (and also other belgains) have a high degree of self-criticism, unpatriotic (almost nobody knows the national athem, mostly Belgians will agree wholeheartedly with any criticism you have to offer of their country, customs or politics, sidenote: we like our country, but don't love it), introverd, reserved , a dose of cynisme, an anarchic streak (evading taxes for example is a national sport), an aversion towards moralizing, pragmatical attitude,etc...

dutch people are more open and especially... noisy ;)
