What are some of your machine specs?

Post by 36drew »

I'm starting to realize that maybe my PC is getting pretty outdated. The machine i'm currently using is:

Dell, Intel Pentium 4
3.00 Ghz
1gig of RAM
512 mb videocard
Windows XP Version 2002

I remember Lazy LOL-ing beyond belief when I asked Strokey about RAM. What are you machine specs?

Well I'm at work at the minute, but my general advice is -

If it's not broke, don't fix it. ;)

Unless it's causing you problems. In that case, I recommend a sledgehammer.

Drew, your machine is pretty outdated, but to be honest if the most demanding thing you do is play AOE then it's not really all that bad. Ok, you may not be playing maxed out on graphics but I doubt your far off.
If spending out on a new machine scares you a little at the moment, then consider a really good clean-up or perhaps a clean install. (wipe the hard drive). You would be suprised how much this can improve your overall performance.

Ouch, that's better than mine. If yours is "outdated" then I don't know what mine is. I don't think I'll replace mine, since at present I can blame my poor micro on my "relaxed" computer (i.e. only about 50% of the time when you click a unit in a hurry do you get the unit selected), but if I upgrade I'll have to blame my poor micro on myself.

It's not that it is seldom looked at, it's that not many replies are often required so threads are old.

In regards to your system... the spinpoint is a great drive, the 1TB version is currently very good value and can be found for under £80.

Drew, my old machine always ran AOE at low graphics settings just fine. It was a P4 2.0 Ghz with 512 MB RAM and a 64 MB video card. Not great graphics by a long shot, but was always playable.

My new self-built rig has

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache
4 GB RAM
8800GT video card

And has been able to run anything I throw at it....although in another online game when there were way too many many other folks in the screen, it kinda got jumpy on me......but for AOE, the graphics that were a Picasso are now a Rembrandt. Both great, but one is far more detailed and refined. (Although, I have more lag now with the pumped up graphics.....go figure)

Puh,

Athlon 3000+
1GB DDR2 Ram (I bought another 1GB ship, but then the comp started to break down, so i stay with 1GB at the moment)
256 DDR Nvidia something. Not really sure.

So i guess i'm outdated, but everything works and i don't feel the need to play everything on the highest settings.

There are some serious antiques out there, but AOE3 does appear to be pretty low spec, my old 2.53 P4 on a 4*AGP board used to run it okay. I now have a dual core E6600 and load times have pretty much halved, although it doesn't seem much different in game ...

Current specs:

Coolermaster 330 case - as big as my desk allows ...
Vista 64
E6600 core 2 duo - o/c current speed not known
2 * 2GB corsair RAM
Arctic Pro Freezer 7 Pro
Asus P5B Mobo
GeForce 256 Mb 7800GT - running o/c
550 W PSU - name escapes me at present
X-Fi Xtreme gamer Soundcard
30 GB 10,000 rpm Raptor drive for OS only
250 GB Barracuda SATA drive for everything else
Xilence and Thermaltake Hardcano fan controller and temp monitors.

I only have a small monitor so can cope with the graphics card at present, athough it is a bit old. I need an extra SATA drive as well as the current one is filling up. If I have a dual slot sized graphics card, then I can't use the PCI slots for firewire etc.
