last year my dad bought me a shotgun for my 17th birthday. :twisted: I have yet to use it though since I will be mostly shooting it at my families cabin and the onlt time we have been up there since i got it was for work detail.
Anyway have fun. Right now I am the most active than what I will be for the rest of the school year. After water polo ends it is time to relax and let senioritis to set in

In the great Republic of the United States of America, where enemies lurk around every corner, everyone has the right to carry a pistol for self-defense purposes. At least, that's what the Supreme Court told us last June. This was the first time they ever really talked about it, and it really angered the Mayor in Chicago, where it is illegal to own a handgun without a special permit. I guess that law is out the window now.

Cool, a gun debate. Who knew Indy would jump in???
1) gun laws will not remove guns from anyone but law abiding citizens;
2) consideration 1 holds until someone can repeal physics;
3) even if you get rid of the guns (which you can't see 1 & 2), criminals are made up of:
a) the most physically capable segment of society;
b) who are allowed to select their own victims;
4) the only way you can mitigate 3 is to allow the lesser physically capable to carry a lethal weapon if they want to;
5) the police are not there to protect, they are there to clean up messes;
6) virtually all gun crimes are committed by either previous felons or by premeditated actors planning a big spree; and
7) the bad actors in 6 are not affected significantly by gun laws.
One that cannot be proven and therefore can only persuade the already converted is that I have a problem with the government (which I think screws up just about everything) having a complete monopoly on deadly force against private citizens. Of course, all you can do is impose a time lag on an armed citizenry, you can't really enforce disarmament if the people have had enough due to 1 & 2 above.

Yeah but you got countries like El Salvador, it is legal for the Salvadorans to carry guns, and their violent gun crime is one of the worst in the world, I was watching a documentary following the most dangerous countries in the world, and El Salvador, think its like 8 people are murdered a day, in a population of 7 million, it may not seem a lot but if you look at the long term, thats 3% of the countries popuation a year :-/
And I think America COULD turn into a country like El Salvador, not necessarily exactly the same, but think, so many different cultures in 1 society, one thing could erupt, andd then you got one hell of a shootout, I know most Americans, like all in this clan would have them for self defence, but when you got the more dangerous places, and I know a couple of people in this clan that have lived in these more dangerous parts, not naming them, and they told me how bad it was, now imagine that and how much that might spread.
I know this is just speculating what CAN happen, but I've always been more of a pessimist than an optimist in matters like these.

djdan:
All true enough, but El Salvador would be that way with or without the gun laws. Iraq banned guns for citizens for quite a while after 2003, and yet it was one of the most violent places in the world (I believe they allow limited gun ownership now, but maybe not yet). The most violent places in America have had, in effect, gun bans for a long time. Chicago and Washington DC have effectively banned hand guns from citizens for many years and have some of the worst murder rates in the country.
If society breaks down like you worry about, people will have guns anyway due to considerations 1 and 2 above. The only difference is the worst people will have a head start.
