I actually hear that the sport is very popular in places like Columbus, OH and on the East Coast as well...

It was actually pretty popular in Chicago, too. They had a team there called the "Chicago Fire."
In New York, we have so many Europeans and South Americans walking around that there is never a shortage of football (soccer) fanatics. The Brazilians are particularly vocal.
