help with troubleshooting

Post by shootbogey »

SevereBeating was telling me the other day that there are a couple of clan members who consistently have trouble joining games and are perpetually frustrated by it.

I run an ISP and can assist with some of the more difficult issues. We run a support program which allows a one-time remote access session with individual customers and we use this for figuring out complex problems. The program allows a chat and gives you the option to record what we did for later reference.

Give a shout if I can be of assistance on networking issues where you need to "show" the problem to tech support, let me know!

Nice, thanks for the offer Allen. I know mnbob knows a fair bit about computers, but perhaps you may be able to help him out, he went from having no connection problems to not being able to connect at all, and all this without changing any settings.

Are you still having problems Bob? I saw where ES did a "server reboot" to alleviate some "failed to join" issues that they were able to duplicate. The reboot was just this past Monday or Tuesday.

I believe I now know what my problem is. I just don't know how to fix it yet short of re-installing Windows. While talking with Mediacom tech support tonight with my main computer connecting directly to my cable modem, we discovered that my IP cannot be pinged. That most likely explains why ESO doesn't let me join games. Nobody can ping me so ESO rejects my connection as being bad.

I then re-booted in "Safe Mode with Networking" and he was able to ping my connection without any problem. So I just have to figure out what program or setting is not allowing pings. I have no anti-virus program running and windows firewall was off so those aren't the culprits.

I think I'm back in business! Yesterday was my first real effort to trouble shoot since I originally started having the problem.

Turns out that an option in my Cisco VPN client had been turned on. "Stateful Firewall (Always On)" I must have accidentally turned that on way back in December and never realized what it had done.

Now to just get my router setup working again which shouldn't be too difficult.
