Death at Sea, Explorers/Monks/Warchiefs

Post by Sun_Tzu1 »

Apologies if you already knew this:

Warchiefs lie where they die until they're resurrected, etc. But, what happens if they die in a boat? Do they die permanently?

In good fashion, rather than ask here, I thought I'd just find out myself by testing and report it back.

So, I had my warchief killed in a Canoe. And, rather than loosing him, he just reappeared alive at my dock. So he didn't actually die.

Then I thought, where does he reappear if you blow your dock up? So, I did it again and he reappeared where my dock was before I killed it.

I never though about that. Interesting.

So when you had him killed in a canoe, you mean the canoe was sunk?

Yes, I put him in the Canoe and had an enemy ship sink it.

It's probably at the nearest point on shore is my guess. Probably just happened to be near your dock.
Groovy.

I'm guessing that he spawns near the water drop off point. I'll try to test this out later to see for sure (by moving drop off point). What would be interesting is to build a dock on a map without a drop off point, make a ship, destroy, and watch what happens.

Yeh I thought under all circumstances they were returned to where they got on the boat..
Either way, this is a pretty cruel way to treat your explorers.

That sounds like it might be right.

ES should make one of the civs have an explorer that can swim. i.e., that can travel, attack/collect treasures on the land *and* sea. It might make for an interesting twist.

In TWC, when you could load units into fishing boats (bug), we were making use of that by playing the 3 fishing boat card and sending a settler to the island on California(?) to pick up those extra crates. One time, I was against a Russian player, I went age 2 and then send all my settlers accross the sea, built my dock on the other side and fish boomed. He rushed me, killed my TC (which I sacrificed) and asked if I'd left the game. I boomed and my score overtook his while he was looking for me. Unfortunately, I didn't really understand sea units very well so he came back again because I didn't know how to counter his artillery. Shame. Fun though.

^^^Thats a great idea I never thought of doing that. I still think you can put villagers on fishing boats, I've done this a few time recently to save villies from raids.

You can still garrison units in fishing boats. I do not think that garrison units in fishing boats is a bug, I think not being able to auto garrison with a right click is a bug. You currently have to manually insert the units by using the garrison tab in the lower corner of the screen.

Having a knowledge of the map and where free crates exist as well as what cards to play first should be an advantage.

A swimming, fighting explorer? Hmmm... wouldn't that be Aquaman?

Very funny about escaping the rush to an island. Same thing happened to me in a team game in which all three of us retreated to the island off Carolina. Got totally wiped out in the end, but a good laugh.
