The game against France today was ridiculous. France always seems to get owned by referee calls.

I really wish red cards didn't force you to be a man down. It's bad enough that a player who gets a red is ejected for the whole game (and apparently you don't even have to do anything totally outrageous for it to happen with all the diving in professional soccer).

It's absurd to make a team play a man down for the rest of the entire game just because one player has a dangerous foul. If the red card comes towards the beginning then that team is crippled for the whole game.

Yet I think the Dutch are being overrated. It sucks that their next target is either Russia or Sweden which aren't that much of a competition for Holland :\

You just jealous cuz the Netherlands did where Portugal failed, they managed to win with only 2 guys of the last 2 games :P

Spain will lose as they always do. They always come to a tourney with a promising team and fail miserably.

Abidal didn't make a dangerous foul. He fouled Toni and was last man of the defence. This is always red because he took this clear chance of shooting a goal away from Toni and Italy. This is what the players are knowing for sure and has nothing to do with the referee owning France
If u would make it like u proposed it (not to take one man away) u would have many more fouls like that, because always then another man can come back on the field. And that really would make soccer less enjoying

Oh sometimes being with 10 is a real advantage. There are always games when the team with one man more gets under pressure, because they are not used to play against 10.

Most referees dont give a red card AND a penalty unless it's really a dirty foul. Outside of the box, yes. But in the box 90% it will be yellow and a penalty.

French lost ribery to soon, you really saw their heads go down after that.

This is tourning out to be a fine tournament

In Germany the rule for the referee is, if the last man of the defending team fouls the one who is running to the goal, it is always red. AFAIK this is also enforced by UEFA during Euro, CL and UEFA Cup. And they really do it. Doesn't matter if penalty kick or not

Nevertheless the rules of football:
A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following seven offences:

.....

5. denies an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
http://www.fifa.com/flash/lotg/football ... s12_04.htm

This was in this case for sure because Abidal fouled Toni, so he couldn't score the goal

French SUCK, and got owned for it!! End of, theres not much else to say on the matter lol

IMO, Spain have a good chance vs Italy, as their attacking force os sooo good, but if Luca Toni gets his shooting boots on, Spain are definatly in trouble!!

Germany, were bigged up too much at the beginnig imo!!

Wow, that's a WC qualifier too. Argentina tied Ecuador as well...ouch.

As for Red Cards, well I agree w/all the rules and think a player should be sent off. Especially for tackles from behind.

I have seen instances of something called a "soft" red in the states in High School, where the player is sent off, but can be replaced by a substitute at the referee's discretion. This rule stinks.

Löw, the Germany coach, is not allowed to take place on the bench in the game vs Portugal. So Löw and probably Frings and Podolski are missing. Will be a tough one tomorrow.

Still, unless somebody makes a really truly dirty foul I don't think they should be ejected.

I'd rather see it work like it does in basketball with goal tending. If a player makes a tackle in the box that clearly prevents a player from scoring (like they would have almost surely scored if they weren't tackled from behind) then they should just get an automatic goal.

Or maybe just a penalty kick. That's basically an automatic goal anyway.

But removing a player for the whole game (and the next game as well if I'm not mistaken) and forcing the team to play a man down for the rest of the game...well...that's entirely game changing, and seems unnecessary.

Anyway, as somebody else said, the French just got maimed by calls and injuries. Losing Ribery in the first ten minutes was tough, and then a yellow card (which was fair on a late slide) followed by a red card forcing them to play a man down for the rest of the match...the game was decided then and there.

I mean, I don't really think France is better than Italy these days, but it was still very disappointing. I would much rather see a game decided by actual play rather than referee calls.

At the very very least if a player makes a foul like that and gets a red then the team ought to be able to replace them. Punish the player not the entire team for the rest of the match. Make the team play a man down for at most a few minutes, not the entire game (think hockey where a bad penalty = time in the box).

Cite the rules all you want, but I've been a fan of soccer (and have played soccer) for a while now too and I just think that particular rule is dumb. If red cards were harder to get (like flagrant 2 fouls in basketball) then it might make sense. But clearly red cards are not that uncommon in professional soccer.

No Red cards are VERY uncommon in football, and well its not just the players fault, the team should be disciplining the players so they don't do that in the first place, for a footballer to get sent off(and have someone else come in) wont matter to them, they will still get paid at the end of the day). Change the rule to that and the amount of tackles made inside the box as a last line of defence will sky rocket!

Why would tackles in the box skyrocket if they just turned into:

a) An automatic goal

or

b) a penalty kick

?

Take away the purpose of making such tackles, don't create huge penalties for the entire damn team when one player does it. It obviously still happens and it ruins the game when it does.

Look, I'm all for sending a player off when they do something like purposefully step on somebody or headbutt them (oh Zidane....) to the ground when the ball is nowhere near, but that's just the conduct of one player acting out. I don't care what you say about team discipline, sometimes that happens and the team can't help it. Especially if the other team is saying terrible things behind the referees' backs (ahem, guy who Zidane headbutted).

Individual players ought to be punished for serious fouls, not the entire team AND the fans who are watching and want a fair match decided by the skill and play of a team not wayward calls by the referee or the reckless decisions of a single player.
