Using your ALT key
I just wanted to start this thread about using the alt key. This works really well for raiding villes with hussar. I would like to open the floor to other uses of this.
For example:
When does using ALT work best in fight
Does ALT work for any gathering taska?

Re: Using your ALT key
I use alt key (attack move) in every game. Works best with Cav vs LI (at least that's where I've had the best results). I've never used it with villies gathering, and I don't know that you'd have any advantage that way either. Most of the time, most players have a problem just keeping their lazy villies working, and then working with proper eco balance, much less optimizing villies on gathering proportionately.
The one set-back with attack move is that once you press it, the units attack the closest units regardless of type, so you have to initially put your units in the right spot

Re: Using your ALT key
I use 'z' to attack move, just use alt to look at hit points. Didn't even know it did attack move TBH.
Be careful with attack move when the game is busy, at those times often the computer takes it as a regular move and if you rely on it too much you will get screwed when the computer reads it wrong. Happens most often in larger 3v3 or 4v4 games. There is no substitute for seeing your guys in battle to verify.

Alt's good for microing, no one wants overkills.
Re: Using your ALT key
I use alt for attack move Cav vs LI etc and I also use it with LI or HI (anything with a gun) when retreating cus it makes them do a quick shot, quite micro intensive sometimes but really helps, especially with guns like abus.

Re: Using your ALT key
I don't think I've ever used attack move before. Sound like something I should look into. So is the consensuses here that its worth me getting into the mindset of using it whenever I move military?

Re: Using your ALT key
attack move is OP, but you need to be careful when you use it and with which units, as somebody mentionned, laggy games can make your army run right into enemy troops without attacking and for some units there is just no benifit (like maces)

Basically it does micro for you by letting each of your units target an enemy that is physically closest to its position. So, as everyone has mentioned, you need to maneuver your units to the right place, then hit attack move in the direction of your enemy. They will hit several targets with the same volley. It works best with hand cav against LI or villie bunches (it is a must for uhlans, cossacks and hussars). But I find it also works well for large LI masses if you carefully split them up and do two or more attack-moves, making sure your units are at different ranges from the enemy. That assures that they all hit different targets, rather than waste a volley on a single strelet. When you have CIR-armed skirms and you face muskets or other HI, you can take down up to 6 guys in a single volley with this. And attack-move retreat is essential for hit-n-run games, ie xbow wars. But make sure you keep doing regular move, too... otherwise your guys will stop dead and wait to shoot again. That can invite trouble!
