Japan isn't that OP, a hard rush kills them, as China they're easy.
People just need to play vs Jap slightly differently than some other civs, if you can't adapt then you're nothing and if Japan is so easy, then the person facing you will be playing a few PR levels above their actual skill, get into proper micro and it's easy. All of the Japs I've QS'd (with the exception of one or so PR32/3s) play like noobs but with a strong econ, but it's easy. The ones who play better win.

If you aren't playing a civ with age 2 skirms (everything but China, India, Russia, Aztecs, Dutch, or Ottos), you're screwed. Absolutely nothing else can beat ashi in early age 2.

even dutch are screwed imho, skirmishers are too expensive early game and don't do all that great anyway
Brits have a decent shot vs japan according to some experts

Longbows fail, and ashi > muskets. I don't see how the Brits can win that fight.

Defensive LB turtle, walls + lbs > ashi?

2v2 cuz I just like team games better. Not sure the listed criteria are perfect, but nothing will be perfect. Whatever gets me teamed up with Nav or Sporting is a good rule set for me. Maybe total ages of team <= to 51. :P

why do lb's fail? in a defensive structure it should be really ok

You automatically die if you play defensively against Japan. They'll just triple their ashi attack, go fortress, and spam fire arrows at you.

Also, Soccer, you have to survive to fortress to do that, and he'll just switch to naginata.

ah ofcourse...so obvious. Brits would still be in the Stone-Age trying to invent fire while hunting dinos with sticks...

I love your sarcasm. It's hilarious.

Instead of just mocking me, try to find a way to counter that while playing defensively with Brits.

Are merc's worth it? I know you still have to go to age III, but Jaegers and highlanders are > Ashi's. The nagi's are the problem.
