adding RAM: an easy question for all you tech guys

Post by luukje »

After getting a new portable I can finally upgrade my game machine wich has only 512k RAM today.
But not so simple for a tech noob like me.
I have a packard bell imedia 6300 wich has an Orion (MS-7168 Ver 0.A) motherbord. Can somebody tell me what RAM I should get and where to get it cheap.
Or should I just forget it?

spec of motherbord

Systeemgeheugen
Vier 184-pins DDR SDRAM DIMM-sockets.
Serial Presence Detect
Ondersteuning voor single-sided of double-sided DIMM's (DDR 333 / DDR400)
Ondersteunt max. 4 GB systeemgeheugen

You would notice a large difference if you put 2gig in. 512 is not much these days and gets eaten up pretty quickly by hungry applications. I doubt you would be able to keep hold of the 512 stick you currently have though. Your best option would be to find a 2gig kit (2x1gig 400mhz) and run it in dual mode. It all depends on how much you are willing to part with really, and how cheap you can get the modules, but you're looking at somewhere upwards of £50. If you see £50 is a fair trade off for the better performance then cool, if you don't then you're stuck with your 512. The only other real option would be to find out what memory stick you have in there already, and try to find another one cheap somewhere.

Have the same opinion as Strokey. The RAM u are looking for is also called DDR1 RAM or just DDR

Yes, DDR1. The DDR2 modules are much cheaper, mostly because they are mainstream and people buy/sell large amounts. The older DD1 modules are produced on a very small scale in comparrison, hence the price.

THnx!

I cant play 3v3 anymore, I cant open 7 programs at the same time anymore, it's just getting all so slow. I always knew I was a bit low on the RAM.

Well I've heard it's pretty risky going for second hand 512, so I will probably get some 2*1G DDR400. Softwareshop around the corner has them at 45€ per 1G, they say the price has gone up pretty fast the last months due to DDR being rare. Maybe somewhere on the internet I can find them cheaper.

I want my pc to last another two years, with 2G I might just make it.
(Hopefully I can buy a new one when AOE4 get's out ____dreamin_____)

Yes, you shouldn't be paying more than around £30 - £35 per gig. Shop around.

Just a brief check at http://www.pricewatch.com has DDRs for around $25 a GB (less than 20 Euro). I've found their site to be pretty good, but they are just a clearing house for many companies and so experiences can vary.

Might be a dumb question, but are you able to add RAM to a laptop? I feel that you can't, but I just wanted to make sure cause I would love to if I could
