Internet Speed question and lag

Post by Highlander999 »

In preperation for my new laptop (coming next week :D ) I was talking to my mate (who plays CoD online) what he thought of the uni connection and he said he thought it lags a bit. So I did this test, but I don't know what the results mean.

Any help?

lets see,
lag has nothing to do with the download speed, but your upload speed can help a lot to get it better.

on the other hand in games ou can only avoid lag by having a good ping other than a good pc of course.

in your case 147ms is quite laggy imo

you can do folowing test:

go on ESO
in windows, run "cmd"
type netstat
press enter

now you should be able to see the ip of the ESO server you are on
memorize that ip, write "ping xx.xx.xxx.xx" i the console (replace x with teh ip you get)

then you'll see your ping on the eso server

i have made this test too. i have 2 internets. on the one my ping is 220 and download and upload speed are much worse than hoghlanders. on the other one my ping is 40 but my download and upload speed is nearly the same as his. what does this mean :?:

The server you are testing against is 300 miles away, so your ping is showing quite slow, a closer server may give you a slightly better indication, if you get down to around 30ms or so you'll be fine. Still quite a high ping for 30 miles though......

It doesn't help that half the people who use this connection are streaming something.....

I just tested speedtest.net and got a download speed of 28.45 Mb/s and a ping of 14ms. I also have the cheap ISP internet -- i'd be curious how quick their expensive stuff goes.

Well chaos, a 73 ping is playable but a bit stiff, as our experience with you out there indicates.

Anyone on a wireless connection has a number of ping-reducing options, including going wired and reducing packet sizes. Dropped packets (which trigger a re-send attempt) can cause lag and artificially inflated ping.

Any chance you are running wireless Highlander? 147 is quite high, and would be high even for a dial-up connection.

Yeah, but the uni provide the connection, so I don't think there is anything I can do. Next year it should be better (hopefully)
